The mandolin in Don Giovanni
research‘The mandolin in Don Giovanni’, Mousikos Loghos, 8 (2008) (to be published)
As is well known, Mozart used the mandolin as an obligato instrument in the serenade ‘Deh, vieni alla finestra’ of his opera, Don Giovanni. Based on this fact but also the existence of two songs with mandolin accompaniment by Mozart, these works are presented and analysed and the type of the instrument for which Mozart composed is scrutinized, as well as the factors that possibly urged him to compose for the mandolin (operas like that of Paisiello that were presented in German-speaking areas (obligato use) and songs with mandolin accompaniment in France, which Mozart had visited). In addition, the article includes a reference to Mozart’s contribution in establishing the instrument in the German-speaking countries, as composers like Hummel and Beethoven composed for mandolin, as well as in the diachronic value of the serenade of Don Giovanni.
